Course objectives
1. In the lexicology the students study the structure of Czech vocabulary.
2. The word forming presupposes knowledge of the basic terminology and methods of formation.
3. The students develop their ability to analyse word from semantics and word-forming point of view.
Learning outcomes
In the end of the course the students will be able to:
(a) make analysis of the word meaning and word structure, class the word in the level of vocabulary;
(b) find synonyms or antonyms for specified word, distinguish homonyms and polysemous words;
(c) explain the meaning of some strange words (almost archaism);
(d) identify phrases or other multiverbal lexical units;
(e) explain all terms of word-forming and word building;
(f) make analysis of word-formation (foundation word, word-forming base of word, formant);
(g) make analysis of word-building (the root, prefixed part, suffixed part of the word).
Syllabus
  • 1. Fundamental terminology of the lexicology and word formation in the Czech language.
  • 2. Word and names. Types of names: words, phraseologism, groups of words.
  • 3. Vocabulary in the literary language, spoken Czech, in the dialects and social dialects, in the slang, professional speech and in the argot; expressive lexical units; frequency of the lexical units in the Czech vocabulary and in the various styles of the Czech language. Classification of the vocabulary from the development and historian point of view. Origin of the lexical units. Analysis of the lexical units in the authentically texts.
  • 4. Increasing of the vocabulary. Loanwords.
  • 5. Semantic relations in the vocabulary. Synonyms, its function in the texts. Antonyms, the types of antonyms. Hyponyms, hyperonyms.
  • 6. Proper nouns, proper names. Typology of proper names. Proper names in Czech language teaching in primary school.
  • 7. Word-formation and word-building in Czech language. Fundamental terminology. Motivated and non-motivated words.
  • 8. Types of word-formation in Czech language, their character and productivity. Semantic categories in word-formation, the suffix- and prefix types in the semantic categories.
  • 9. The word-formation by suffixes and prefixes - substantives, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. Semantic categories. Word formation by the terminations.
  • 10. Composition. Abbreviation.
  • 11. Analysis of the words from word-formative point of view.
  • 12. Morphemic analysis of word structure. Analysis of word-building.

Teaching methods
1. Textual analysis, indentifying words in texts, interpretation of word meaning.
2, Analysis of word-forming structure - common and individual work.
3. Complex word-building analysis.
4. Individual word-forming of new words - controlled discussion.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: student have to master written examination of the vocabulary and word-formation and word-building.
The written examination consists of two parts: it includes 20-30 short questions of language phenomena in text of lexicology and 40-50 short questions of word-forming. To be successfull student has to solve 70 % of the questions correctly in each part.
