Intermediate knowledge of Russian language – level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (attending a two term course in bachelor studies).

Course objectives
B2 level language course. Its aim is to improve and extend basic skills essential for comprehending various scientific sources of information, and develop listening, speaking and writing skills, both in general as well as specialized language.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand spoken LSP texts at B2 level of the CEFR;
- understand written LSP texts at B2 level of the CEFR;
- successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with relevant LSP issues at B2 level of the CEFR;
- show a good command of selected grammar structures at B2 level of the CEFR;
- use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control.
Syllabus
  • 1) Development of speaking skills enabling students to deal with common conversation topics (leisure time, place of living, getting around a city, travelling) and about issues related to their study (university, educational systems, student’s subjects of study, bachelor’s and master’s thesis). 2) Development of reading skills in order to enable students to comprehend complicated general and specialized scientific texts. 3) Systematic development of vocabulary in general and academic level as well as in basic specialized terminology. 4) Development of listening skills, especially in terms of general language. 5) Revision and development of grammar awareness in respect to features of a formal style. 6) Development of writing skills; students should produce a structured CV, scholarship application, formal correspondence (request for sending some materials, expressing thanks, conference invitation) and brief summary of a scientific article.

Teaching methods
Listening exercises with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, structure, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, working with dictionaries, casual and scientific conversation. Presentations: field of study.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (only two classes can be missed), completed in-term tasks/home preparation for classes, active participation in classes; 2) Submitted writing assignments: Master's thesis abstract + literature review of Master's thesis sources in Russian (must be submitted prior to the oral part of the exam); 3) Exam: 2 parts: A) written (parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of Russian, writing, SNE terminology); level B2. Total: 70 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (45 marks) B) Oral – A) monologue + B) spoken interaction between two students. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (19 marks). The oral part of the exam can be taken only by students who have passed the written part. In order to be allowed to sit the final exam, students must complete all in-term assignments and meet all deadlines.

Information on completion of the course: Pro úspěšné ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné úkoly. V případě nápadných rozdílů mezi úrovní odevzdaných úkolů a výkony studenta/-ky ve výuce může dojít k přezkoušení. Kurz je ukončen zkouškou na úrovni B2.
