Course objectives
This course introduces students to the unique language of cinema, as well as the history and context of that language, such that they can recognize the formal techniques and choices of directors with an understanding of their effects. Students will engage in close readings of important films, considering the conventions of the medium as they write analytic a final paper. Afterwards, they will be able to lead similar film screenings and discussions with future English pupils—a popular and engaging method of language instruction.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students:
 Will be able to read the formal language of film, such that they can write thoughtful reviews and analyses
 Will recognize the key elements of style: the choices of a director, and the effects such choices produce on an audience, creating the unique “reality” of a film
 Will improve their English writing/composition skills
 Will be able to implement aspects of film analysis during screenings, discussions, and essay assignments with their own future English-language pupils
