Prerequisites
Special emphasis is put on application of theories to practice, social work as a practical discipline together with its theoretical background. Students get familiar with social work methods and will experience their application to practice. There is an important relation between historical development of social work and current trends in this discipline. In the seminars crucial issues of social work in our country and abroad will be discussed as well as extreme and problematic life situations and interferences of social work. Students will search for relations between social work and social education, especially from the point of view of prevention and axiology, they will also examine the relation between a social worker and a client, law and duty, ethical code, burn-out syndrome, supervision and demands of social work. A special attention will be paid to the new social law. As a part of this course there is a work with professional magazines and presentation of the methods of social work.

Course objectives
Students gain basic knowledge of social work as an important helping profession throughout continuous and complex practice in social work.
Learning outcomes
to define social work, understand the topics of social work in context of other disciplines, to prove knowledge concerning the target groups and methods of social work. • knowledge of the field of social pathology and relation among social pathology, social policy and social work. • knowledge of historical development in relation to social work development, basic knowledge of the development abroad and in our country, present important personalities that formed this disciplines • to prove the knowledge of ethical topics in social work, basic knowledge of the new social law and the changes it brought to social work mechanism, knowledge of the development and trends in social work • to get familiar with the methods of social work • to have an overview of the research, to understand the relation between theory and practice of social work, the importance of research for the development of the methods of social work At the end of the course the students gain vast knowledge that can be applied practically as well as in perspective of research and projecting in social studies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Social work as a scientific discipline, its cooperation with other disciplines, philosophy of social work, religious sources of social work. 2. Social pathology in society, searching for possible causes of poverty and ins impact on families and background 3. Social pathology (poverty, aggression, criminality, divorce rate, unemployment etc.) its classification, characteristics. The term of anomie in society. 4. Basic terms of social work, paradigm of social work, crucial issues of social work, insight into the discipline 5. Development of social work abroad (chosen personalities) 6. Development of social work in the Czech Republic (chosen personalities) 7. A social worker and a client, ethical codex of of social worker, relation, values, target groups of social work 8. Social work and social services, demands of social work, burn-out syndrome 9. Volunteering, attitudes to minorities, social work with people endangered by social exclusion 10. Selected methods of social work (work with family, terrain social work, work in communities, advisory service, crisis intervention, mediation and probation, street-work etc.) 11. Social work with selected target groups, social work with people endangered by social exclusion, with homeless people 12. Practical social work, reflection of the professionals, “experts block”, research in the students work, research methods and their practical application

Teaching methods
• Study of the related literature and social work issues • Submitting the paper – social screening in the students locality. The students get familiar with social issues in the place where they live, and elaborate social screening (governmental, non-governmental sector, organizations, fellowship activity, professional facilities, activists, community schools etc.). At the same time the students chose a target group of social work which they consider in the most need and they will find out the appropriate services that are available. Text length: 5 pages and more. • Elaborating a text concerning the history of social work. The students chose a history period of social work, they will describe it and try to find connection to current situation. Its purpose is to understand the development of social work and its importance for practical application these days. Students can chose from the very early times up to modern history. A detailed part, an event, a personality or time period can be chosen. The instructions will be given during the course. Text length: 3 pages and more. • Text requirements: font: Times New Roman, font size: 12, line spacing: 1,5. The text will deal with the topic of the importance of social work. The texts will be submitted via the “moodlinka”, deadline: 30th March. In April there will be a group reflection of the texts as a part of one lecture. • Preparation for written test.
