Course objectives
On the basis of the acquired literary-historical issues, the student is able to independently interpret and critically evaluate contemporary Czech and international literary production for children and youth, to orientate in the book offer and to select suitable titles for his/her own literary-educational work and for use in interdisciplinary transfers. They are able to perceive literature as an important means of cognition and personal development, especially taking into account the values of empathy, solidarity and tolerance.
Learning outcomes
The student is familiar with the literary works of prominent authors of Czech and world literature for children and youth since the beginning of the 21st century, and is able to place them in a developmental context and interpret them. The student is aware of the key features common to this literary production. Is able to characterise the dominant themes and artistic methods and devices in contemporary literature for children and young people. Gain the competence to reflect on their own reading as a basis for discussion with pupils, not only in a literary educational context, thus creating a safe space in the classroom.
Syllabus
  • 1. Current events and changes in Czech and world literature for children and youth after 2000. Important literary awards and their laureates (Hans Christian Andersen Award, Astrid Lindgren Award, BIB Bratislava). 2. Philosophising youth literature. Jostein Gaarder as a philosopher and teacher, popularisation of philosophy, the ability to ask questions and its importance in the process of cognition. 3. The theme of death in children's literature, shaping the concept of death in children's literature through stories with personified Death. 4. The theme of death in literature for young people, literary representation of dying and death in realistic and metaphorical form as a means to appreciate the value of life. 5. Multicultural communication as a theme of literature for children and youth, the cycle "On the Invisible" by E.-E. Schmitt's E. E. Invisible, and education for religious tolerance. 6. The image of the stranger and the alien in literature for children and youth, otherness as a source of social enrichment. 7. The home as a safe space for growing up, literature for children and young people with the theme of internal threats to the home (literary depictions of domestic violence, social exclusion, incomplete families in literature for all ages from pre-readers to adolescents). 8. Home as a safe space for growing up, literature for children and young people with the theme of external threats to the home (issues of migration and refugeeism in realistic and metaphorical stories; literary images of environmental threats and disasters). 9. Children and war; the literary and historical context of the subject from 2000 to the present; the diversity of narratives about the Holocaust depending on the national literary context. 10. Children and war; authentic materials (children's war diaries) and their editorial accessibility. 11. I, we, you, they; literature for children and young people and its possibilities in shaping one's own personality (identity and identification), strengthening empathy and solidarity. 12. Model complex interpretation of a literary work as a starting point for creating one's own reflections.

Teaching methods
The lecture combines a literary-historical and literary-theoretical interpretation with an interpretive work of selected fiction sources from Czech and world literature for children and youth, taking into account the objectives of the course, which go beyond the literary-educational level. Students supplement their explanations with independent reading of literary works related to the individual topics. Opportunities for self-study are expanded by the Interactive Course Syllabus, which does not copy the content of the lectures but offers an alternative approach to the topic (specialist texts and excerpts from fiction as additional topics and stimuli for independent reflection on the given thematic areas).
Assessment methods
Credit is awarded for a written work (3-5 pages in length), for which a total of 30 points are assessed in terms of professionalism; own interpretative approach to the literary text; ability to reflect on the topic with regard to in-school and out-of-school work with children and adolescents; linguistic level of elaboration. A minimum of 25 points is required for credit.
