- Course objectives
- This course examines the development of American poetry from the 1960s to present. The course is designed to introduce students to new trends in poetry (sound poetry, performance poetry), new authors (poets of various ethnic backgrounds, feminist poets) and new subject matters (political poetry).

- 1. Introduction: new trends, authors, subject matters 2. L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets (Charles Bernstein, Bruce Andrews) 3. Sound poetry (John Giorno, Anne Waldman) 4. Performance poetry (Laurie Anderson) 5. Concrete/visual poetry 6. Feminist poets (Adrienne Rich, Olga Broumas, Marge Piercy) 7. Native American poets (Joy Harjo, Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich) 8. Afro-American poets (Ntozake Shange, Ishmael Reed) 9. Hispanic poets (Judith Ortiz Cofer, Pedro Pietri) 10. Asian American poets(Janice Mirikitani) 11. Poets Laureate (Maxine Kumin, Rita Dove) 12. Poetry Awards (Philip Levine, Sharon Olds)
