Course objectives
The course in stylistics presents a review of the distinctive features of the functional styles in English. It focuses on the stylistic means available in English at phonetical, phonological, graphetical, morphological, syntactical, lexical and semantic level and introduces the students to the study of the stylistics of a text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Stylistics as a linguistic discipline. Explicitness and redundancy in language. 2. Norm and deviation. Stylistic markers of a style. 3. The linguistic approach to stylistics and literary stylistics. 4. Criteria for stylistic analysis. 5. Functional styles in English. 6. Linguistic description of a text. Cohesion and coherence. 7. Stylistic means at phonological and graphological level. 8. Stylistic means at morphologhical level. 9. Stylistic means at syntactic level. 10. Stylistic means at lexical level. 11. Stylistic means at semantic level. 12. Towards the style of a text.
