- Course objectives
- The aim of this lecture is to provide an introduction to the structure of the simple sentence, equipping the students with basic terms and practical skills which would enable them to start seeing the hierarchy and relationships of the basic constituents of a clause and carry out a very basic syntatic analysis using concrete English examples. The main emphasis is on students understanding the three-level syntactic analysis (syntactic functions-sentence elements, syntactc forms-types of phrases and clauses and, finally, word classes) employed and presented in the form of tree diagrams. Further topics are also discussed (modality,non-finite verb forms) to give the students some theoretical background for the practical work done in the seminar accompanying the lecture.
