- Course objectives
- The main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic features of Russian folklore, old Russian literature and culture; to learn the history of old Russian literature and its relations with the historical and politoval conditions in Russia; to analyze the relations of Russian folklore and literature; to understand and analyze the relations between literature, art and music; to understand and analyze the relations between the styles, movements and genres in their historical evolution;

- The syllabus of Russian folklore and old Russian literature: 1. The theory of folklore, the main representatives of Eastern Slavonic folklore studies 2. Folk songs, ballads 3. Bylina; history, main heroes, singers, narrators, bearers; historical songs, 4. Folktales; genres, characteristics, collectors 5. Russian folk wedding 6. The periodization of Russian literature from the Middle Ages up to the beginning of the 19th century 7. Folk tradition of Russian poetry; The Tale of Igors Campaign 8. Translations of the Holy Bible (New Covenant, Testament), lives of the saints, battle stories, chronicles, travel and biographical stories 9. Stories of the 17th century. The beginning of Russian theatre and drama. Russian baroque 10. Russian classicism. M. Lomonosov and his reforms 11. Russian theatre and poetry (D. I. Fonvizin, G. R. Derzhavin) 12. Sentimentalism and Enlightenment - (N. I. Novikov, N. M. Karamzin, A. N. Radishchev)
