Course objectives
In this seminar students are introduced to the essentials of the literary critical work. They will study works composed in the period of the Enlightenment and National Revival. They will also learn about the ways of writing a seminar assignment.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to Czech literature of the National Revival. 2. Basic problems of the development of literature in the period of the National Revival, outline of the main stages of the development. 3. Basic facts from the literature of the National Revival. 4. Initiation of the National Revival in Czech literature. 5. Understanding of literature of the National Revival within the society (1830 – 1848). 6. Literature in the time of the revolution of 1848.

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: Lecture. Type of completion: Credit. Credit requirements: end-of-term written test in literature of the first half of the 19th century and the enlightment literature. Students are also oblidged to hand in a seminar paper.
