- Cíle předmětu
- This course is an introduction to thinking and writing about literature. Foremost, we will read and discuss a wide variety of texts. In our discussions, we will focus on how we, as readers, can approach these texts creatively and independently so that we become empowered by literature - for example, by becoming the co-creators of meaning. In order to reach that goal, we will start assembling the basic toolbox of an empowered reader: we will learn how to pose effective questions and lead a discussion about literature, how to employ the tools of critical analysis, use the basic terms of literary theory and criticism, and be comfortable with the conventions of academic discourse. We will also practice essential writing skills, such as explication or comparison and contrast.

- In this course students are to demonstrate understanding of selected literature, knowledge is to be level supported by discussions and advanced textbooks; such knowledge provides an underpinning for a field of work or vocation, personal development, and further studies to complete the first cycle; students are expected to apply the gained knowledge and understanding in future literary courses; students are to practice their ability to identify and use data to formulate responses to well-defined concrete and abstract problems; students are to be trained to communicate their understanding, as well as develop critical skills via various activities, they are expected to co-work with peers.

Reading. You are required to keep up with the reading for every class. You need to download and print out the readings from moodlinka as well as bring them to class. (All readings are available from moodlinka.) The knowledge of the reading material may be tested by quizzes and on the final exam. Writing. There will be 3 major writing assignments (typed, 1-page double-spaced, font 12) announced in class and posted on moodlinka. You are required to submit a hard copy (not just email) on time and be able to discuss your writing in class. Papers will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Late papers may result in a lower final grade. Attendance. It is strongly recommended that you attend all sessions. This is a hands-on, discussion-based class. You, as an active participant, co-create its content. The content of the class thus requires your active presence in the class and cannot be simply learned from a distance. For the same reason, it is hardly possible for an absentee to catch up with everything at the end of the semester. If you are absent, you will find the next reading and homework on moodlinka. You are expected to catch up with all reading and homework by the next class. Participation. This is a discussion-based course. You are expected to come to class prepared and participate in class debates. Homework. Further homework may be assigned during the semester. Class etiquette. Lateness to class is disruptive to all and therefore should be avoided. For the same reason, cell phones need to be switched off. Email etiquette. All necessary information will be delivered in class and posted on moodlinka. Inquiries about your work can be voiced in class and also during my office hours. Inquiries via email thus need to be limited only to emergencies. I will check email once a day during the week, but not on weekends. Academic Honor and Academic Integrity. Students are not to perform any kind of scholastic dishonesty, including plagiarism. During the course of your study, you will be expected not to give or receive any unauthorized aid on academic work. It is your responsibility to understand what constitutes scholastic dishonesty and to avoid it at all costs. Final exam: In the exam period, you will sit for a written exam that will test the reading knowledge of the materials covered in class.
