A pass in SV4BP_1AB1. The intermediate student (Level B1) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including special discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with partners without strain for either party. Can produce a mini-essay on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- Course objectives
- The student will learn and deepen selected academic skills (oral presentations, discussions, presenting and justifying the point, etc.) in social topics in English. The students will be graded for their active participation in the class, oral and written assignments, oral presentation, as well as for the final end-of-the-term test (pass limit 70%) and their final special presentation (level B1).
- Syllabus
- SV4BP_2AB1 Cizí jazyk B - jazyk anglický;
- Weeks 1 - 4 Topic 5: Stress and its consequences. Healthy x unhealthy lifestyles. Texts about stress, recommendations on coping with stress. Study and academic skills - personal experience and reflection, expressing opinion, group discussion, and opinion exchange. Grammar revision – revision of tenses, 1st and 2nd conditionals. Listening – Stress in teaching. In-class discussion: 'How should the teachers get ready for and cope with stressful situations in their job''? Trial TEST – Topic 5 grammar and vocabulary Homework 1 (to be uploaded by 29.9.2013): The student can earn up to 10 marks (by uploading in due time and after in-class discussions). 1. Your recommendations on how to deal with stressful situations (at least 5 situations) 2. Ten sentences using the -IF clauses (including WOULD).
- Weeks 5–7 Topic 6: Current problems in Czech schools (bullying, truancy, addictions). Texts on school issues/problems. Study and academic skills – writing summaries, coherent writing, discussion, arguing the point, role-play. Grammar revision – phrasal verbs, indirect speech - affirmative statements. Homework 2. Write down a short story (10 lines) on: 'How can educators beat their stress? Upload HW2 to Odevzdavarna by 6.10.2013 (the student can earn up to 5 marks). Homework 3 - RCS (to be uploaded by 27.10.13. The student can earn up to 15 marks (by uploading the RCS to ODEVZDAVARNA in due time and after the in-class discussion in Weeks 6-7). Reading comprehension sheet (with a current web text analysis on Problems in Schools and Community). Expressing opinion. Solution. Justifying the point. New vocabulary, pronunciation. Discussion. TEST: Topic 6 vocabulary.
- Weeks 8–10 Topic 7: Current social issues in the world (gender, race, cultural differences, ethnic minorities, immigration, politics, economy, etc.). In-class discussion about a short online text on current hot social issues. Study and academic skills – presenting the point, arguments based on experience, problem solving, justifying the point, discussion. Grammar revision: sequence of tenses, indirect questions, infinitives; countables, uncountables, quantifiers. Homework 4 - MS PowerPoint presentation: MY FIELD OF STUDY (Introducing oneself. Hot issues of my course (my field of study). My undergraduate project. Analysis of one text on a special issue related to the undergraduate project - vocabulary, summary, opinion; two questions for the class discussion). HOMEWORK 4 to be uploaded by 24.11.2013 (up to 30 marks)
- Weeks 11 – 13 Topic 8: My field of study. Presentations to fellow students. See HW4. Study and academic skills -– presentation language and skills, building specialized vocabulary – presentations and professional language, power point presentation. Grammar – relative pronouns/clauses.

- Examination requirements:
a) Active participation in practical lessons during the semester b) Completed three written assignments (HW 1, HW 2; HW 3) plus in-class discussions; up to 30 marks altogether c) Oral presentation (Homework 4). Must be given before the final test. Up to 30 marks. A student who will not fulfil the above stated requirements will not be admitted to sit the final test! d) Final test on PC – Tue 7.1.14 (up to 40 marks, 70 % pass, i.e 28 marks). The final grade: 1. Three written assignments – HW1, HW2, HW3 (up to 30 marks) 2. Final presentation HW4 (up to 30 marks) 3. Final test (up to 40 marks; 70% pass = 28 marks as a minimum). Part A - Reading, grammar, vocabulary (30), Part B - Writing (10). Final grade: Grade A (100-94 marks), Grade B (93-88), Grade C (87-82), Grade D (81-76), Grade E (75-70 marks). - Language of instruction
