Course objectives
Student will be able to work with citations, work with data, tables, graphs, interpret data, tables graphs, make statistics maps, work with basic or nonbasic files, describe files. Geographical information and its verbal, tabular, graphic and cartographic processing including the use of basic statistical methods provided in basic program equipment.
Syllabus
  • Geography as a science using methods. Basic outline of methods, data, information and its sources, basic statistical terms, graphs, cartograms and diagrams, theoretical distribution, correlation and timelines.
  • 1. Creation and development of statistics, its past and present importance for geography.
  • 2. Sampling.
  • 3. Primary elaboration of statistical information (table, graph, statistical map and its basic components and principles of geographical feature organization and demonstration.
  • 4. Descriptive statistics and its use in practice (mean value, characteristics of variability, asymmetry and acuteness)
  • 5. Methods of timelines and its importance for analysis of development tendencies.
  • 6. Main geographical applications of several fields of mathematical statistics (theoretical distribution of random quantities, characteristics of dependence, testing).
  • 7. Use of special statistical PC programs in geography.
