Course objectives
The subject presents a complex area of work with scientific information and information literacy, which is a necessary competence of university students, and also is not optimal covered within their fields of study. The aim of the course is to introduce students topics, areas and particular skills that will enable them to effectively manage the demands of the academic environment and also develop their own research activities. Graduates of the course acquire skills to define its information needs, decide which sources of information are appropriate and locate relevant sources and also prepare a good scientific text, which will respect the principles of citation and publishing ethics.
Syllabus
  • Syllabus The subject is conceived as a series of interconnected seminars with an emphasis on practical adoption of knowledge – each lecture in the range of 90 minutes (45 min. of seminar + 45 min. of exercise).

    • Introduction to the subject and the library
    • Introduction to information literacy, information literacy performance models, principles of information hygiene
    • Working with library catalogs
    • Searching in professional electronic resources
    • Searching in professional electronic resources with a focus on open access resources
    • Evaluation of professional resources
    • Interpretation of professional resources
    • Creation of professional text
    • Work with Microsoft Word
    • Citing according to ISO 690
    • Citing according to APA
    • Presentation skills

Teaching methods
Classes will be conducted through interactive seminars. Each unit will include educational theory (interpretation) section, then students will work in groups or individually on practical tasks, or in specific situations. Lecturers will use motivational teaching methods.
Assessment methods
For the verification of planned learning outcomes will serve presentation of team and individual student activities, or doing tasks within the thematic sessions. The lecturer will provide students constructive feedback. The condition for successful completion of the course and getting the colloquium is an active involvement in exercise, fulfilling the tasks and final group discussion, when the teacher verifies the acquired knowledge of students and their ability to integrate with others.
