Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with a means for developing and extending their use of English with particular emphasis on English related to teaching. It focusses on the English needed in the classroom, for studying the EFL teaching and learning, for participating in teacher development and teacher-training courses, conferences, workshops etc. The framework of the course is based upon a book called "English for the Teacher" (see Literature below) which is a language improvement course for teachers of English as a Foreing Language, and is also provided with e-learning support in Interaktivní osnova in IS. Integral part are tasks related to the teaching practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will: be able to discuss a wide range of topics connected to teaching be able to read and analyse news articles related to teaching be able to share their experiences with classmates and give advice on problematic issues in their teaching pass an exam at C1 level
Syllabus
  • The course will gradually cover Units 1-7 from English for the Teacher (see below), each session will also comprise students' presentations as well as extra practice of various aspects of grammar/vocabulary. Syllabus: Introduction - teaching English as a foreign language. Unit 1: About communication. Unit 2: About language learning. Unit 3: About you. Unit 4: Talking about coursebooks. Unit 5: Talking about lessons. Unit 6: Talking about relationships. Unit 7: Teacher development. Review of units 1-7. 8. constant reference will be made to the teaching practice throughout the course

Teaching methods
class discussion, presentations, practice of productive/receptive skills, home study, observations at teaching practice
Assessment methods
The classes will be based on class discussion, pair-work and group-work, listening, reading and speaking. A communicative approach will be used. Obtaining the final credit for this course draws on continuous assessment throughout the term, which comprises: - active participation, contribution and preparation; using observations at teaching practice for some of the following tasks: - 2 online forums - 1 essay - 1 credit test The general passmark is 70%.
