Prerequisites
The content of the subject extends knowledge of the basics of law, provides deeper information from previous legal and socio-pedagogical subjects. The skills of working with and searching for legal texts will also be deepened.

Course objectives
To provide students with key knowledge about practical aspects of the functioning of the legal system and the state power, and to focus more closely on selected topics relevant to the field of study. Students will get an overview of the basic institutes of family law, anti-discrimination law, social security law and the legal foundation of social services. They will learn about the functioning of governmental and non-governmental organizations in these areas and the possibilities of defense in case of violation of the related rights of the individual. They will learn how to search in related legislation. Through the submitted case studies, they will learn to apply the law to specific cases.
Syllabus
  • 1. Judicial system and other possibilities of defense of rights, the importance of non-governmental non-profit organizations for law enforcement (judicial and extrajudicial protection of the law, recourse to administrative and judicial remedies, ombudsman – his position and competences, alternative dispute resolution - mediation, arbitration, the role and possibilities of supporting the non-governmental sector, taking into account NGOs dealing with the protection of fundamental human rights). 2. Anti-Discrimination Law, Current Issues. The notion of discrimination and unequal treatment, enforcing anti-discrimination law. The Ombudsman's role in the area of discrimination. 3. Equal access to education, issues of education of children and pupils with special educational needs. Options for enforcing the right to education and its fulfillment. 4. The rights of the child and their enforcement. Modification in the Civil Code. Special regulations. Options for enforcing the rights of the child. Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Role of the Institutions of Social and Legal Protection of Children. 5. Substitute family care, institutional and protective care. Types of childcare facilities and their legislation. Qualification prerequisites for the staff of these facilities. Quality standards and control. 6. Social security law. Assistance in material needs. Social assistance benefits for people with disabilities. State social support. Pensions. 7. Social services. Types of social service facilities. Qualification prerequisites for social workers and workers in social services. Quality standards, control and inspection of social service.
