- Extension of Teaching Qualification for secondary schools (programme PdF, C-CV, specialization Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in German Language and Literature)
- German Language Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (programme PdF, C-CV)
- Course objectives
- The course aims at providing the basics of etymology for foreign language teachers, who will gain insights into the variability of form and meaning of words during the course of language development. These insights should prevent the futur teachers from viewing phonological and semantic properties of the foreign language material as natural and unchangeable features and discourage an attitude fixed on formal correctness only. In addition, the ability to handle entymological handbooks is developped.
- Learning outcomes
- Students are able to derive the phonic structure and (potential) meaning of lexemes on the basis of general phonic laws and semantic shifts. They are able to work effectively with etymological dictionaries and use their knowledge practically in teaching German language.
- Syllabus
- - Definition of "etymology" as a linguistic discipline;
- - overview on different possibilities of the genesis of words;
- - the formal side of a lexeme (formativ) and an outline of the most important phonic changes (spontaneous and combinatorial phonic changes, the first shift of consonants, the second shift of consonants, apophonia, vowel fronting);
- - non-transparent word formation constructions (primary composition, secondary composition, noun derivation, adjective derivation, verb derivation);
- -semantic changes (meaning expansion, meaning narrowing, making words pejorative, improving of words);
- - lexical transfere (borrowings and foreign word, Latin and German, French and German, Yiddish and German, Slavonic languages and German, English and German);
- - the structure of a lexical entry in etymological dictionaries.
