- Course objectives
- The purpose of the course is to deepen the knowledge of the students in the field of multicultural education as a means of preparation for the social, political, and economical reality through educational programmes. Multicultural education presupposes a certain human ability to understand and respect other cultures (national minorities, migrating foreigners, members of different nationalities, faiths, etc.). It includes practice, educational activity, infrastructure, research that captures the multicultural reality of scientific theory which emerges among sciences. Grasping the subject involves research in selected areas of multicultural education which allows students to penetrate the current issues of multicultural education. The goal is the ability to reflect on the current situation in the individual topics of ME (migration, gender, extremism, inclusion, xenophobia in the society, etc.) and apply the knowledge in theory and practice.
- Learning outcomes
- The key outputs are: - definition of basic terms and directions (multiculturalism, pluralism, inclusion, gender, identity, racism, xenophobia, discrimination, prejudice, migration, anti-Semitism, feminism, extremism, homophobia, segregation, holocaust, etc.) - definition of multicultural education in the context of today’s society, multicultural education and multiculturalism = constructing theoretical foundations of multicultural education, cooperation with other scientific fields, e.g. with cultural anthropology, ethnology, ethnography, sociology, intercultural psychology, ethnopsychology, ethnolinguistics, pedagogy, social work and social politics, international law, - study of multicultural education in the context of multiculturalism which is defined as an “ideal of harmonic coexistence of different cultural and ethnical groups in plural society” - research reflection - project design in the field of multicultural education
- Syllabus
- Multicultural education – significance and purpose in the contemporary context, multicultural education as a part of education and training of educators. Diversity and openness of the school environment, problematic areas of multicultural education in terms of education as a whole (homophobia, extremism, segregation), cross-curricular subject in the Framework Educational Programme (FEP) for Basic Education. Multiculturalism as a basis for the coexistence of different sociocultural groups with specific systems of traditions, institutions, meanings. In the focus there is world plurality, plurality of sociocultural patterns, codes of communication, possibilities of transmission and exchange between relatively closed systems. Multiculturalism and multicultural education as a dynamic exchange of cultural when mutual influence between cultures is given way and new systems are spawned. Migration and its possible impact on the development of the society, national minorities and majority society – development and prospect of coexistence, the position of Romani people in the Czech society and in Europe, historical and contemporary threat of anti-Semitism, discrimination of selected groups of people (homosexual minorities, position of women in the society, ageism). World religions and new religious movements – basic insight into the topic (discussion between world religions, possible problematic areas and areas of conflict). Global education and multicultural education, developmental education. Research capturing the multicultural state of contemporary society (usefulness for theory and practice). Project design as an important mechanism of multicultural education.

- Teaching methods
- Classes take the form of seminars, part of which is independent theoretical preparation, teaching methods consist of lectures and exercises, directed especially towards project design in multicultural education.
- Assessment methods
- The course is concluded by a colloquium involving an academic discussion about the subject; based on their research analyses, the students draft a project design addressing various areas of multicultural education. It is followed by a discussion about the topics of multicultural education, reflection, analysis and results of research in multicultural education, and project design in multicultural education. The research is conducted according to the teacher’s instructions (the output is project design and analysis).
