- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the historical and social contexts of the development of literature for children and youth and its theoretical background. Students get acquainted with national and world literature for children and youth, from its beginning to 1989.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, students will be able to:
- periodize children’s and youth literature in relation to the national literature;
- analyze the effect of the world’s children’s literature on local production;
- identify the literary movements, periods and groups;
- identify and analyze the production of important literary figures;
- connect the development of the Czech children’s and youth literature with general socio-cultural events. - Syllabus
- 1. Beginnings and definition of European young adult literature, the first fairy tales written by authors.
- 2. Preconditions for development of the Czech children’s and young adult literature in the 1st half of the 19th century.
- 3. Classical poets of the 30’s to 90’s of the 19th century and a development of children’s poetry.
- 4. Intentional and non-intentional prose of the 19th century.
- 5. Folk tale tradition and its position in children’s reading, storytellers.
- 6. Development of modern fairy tales written by authors in the 19th and 20th century as a principal inspirational movement for the contemporary culture. Boom of fairy tales written by authors in the Czech literature of the interwar period.
- 7. Stories fiction of the 19th and the 1st half of the 20th century in world and Czech literature.
- 8. Child hero stories in Czech and world literature, changes of this genre and its representatives in the Czech literature from 1945 to the end of the 80’s of the 20th century.
- 9. The 60’s of the 20th century – new impulses in the Czech children’s and young adult literature.
- 10. Element of a play, diversity within genres, nonsense in the children’s literature of the 2nd half of the 20th century; various forms of humour in children’s literature.

- Teaching methods
- Type of course: lecture. Lectures summarize literary-hstorical knowledge, students own reading is selected in order to illustrate the tendencies of development in the literature for children.
- Assessment methods
- Requirements: students are required to pass a written test in history of literature and the recommneded reading. The test covers ten questions. Questions are evaluated separately. Passmark is up to and including 2,9.
