Course objectives
Students will - get acquainted with the fundamentals and importance of self-reflection;
- learn about roles of the teacher of foreign languages and his/her competences;
- learn about the needs of students of different age groups;
- get to know teaching materials which respect the specifics of different age groups.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- explain the basic principles of English language teaching;
- talk about the role of a foreign language teacher;
- discuss the specifics of foreign language teaching of different age groups;
- use the target language considering age and individual differences of learners;
- describe the concept of self-reflection;
- write a short reflective report about their current teaching experience;
- set goals for their professional development;
- find appropriate main and supplementary teaching material;
- create a list of sources of suitable teaching material;
- give feedback and act on feedback given by their teacher and peers.

  • 1 English language teacher: roles of the teacher, teacher's qualities.
  • 2 English language teacher: content knowledge and didactic content knowledge.
  • 3 Teacher: self-reflection. EPOSTL (European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages).
  • 4 The basic principles of class management in foreign language teaching.
  • 5 Class dynamics.
  • 6 Learner: motivation.
  • 7 Learner: age differences and needs.
  • 8 Learner: individual specifics.
  • 9 System of the foreign language: skills, language means.
  • 10 How we learn foreign languages.
  • 11 Teaching materials and basic principles of their selection.
  • 12 Basic principles of selecting supplementary materials.
