Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic principles and concepts in the theory of translation with a focus on the practical component (especially working with corpora in translation and text stylization). Problematic areas of particular texts for hours and discuss thoroughly solved through discussion.
Learning outcomes
The course is an introduction to the theory and practice of translation. It presents basic information about the current state of translation studies and helps to orientate in other possibilities of professional employment of students. Student will be able to: - to focus on the basic theory and practice of translation; - in particular, to distinguish the texts in a stylistic way; - preserve the purpose and function of different types of texts; - choose adequate vocabulary, characteristic phrases for different styles.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to translation theory. Translation errors.
  • 2. Modern technologies in translation practice. Possibilities of use of language corpora in translation practice.
  • 3. Stylization. Translation of demanding language phenomena (optional).
  • 4. Newspaper style and its specifics. Translation of a newspaper text.

Teaching methods
Students regularly attend seminars, prepare for them on the basis of instructions received in advance, and work on assignments.
Assessment methods
Credit is awarded for work in regular seminars and completion of all tasks. Continuous preparation for seminars based on an interactive syllabus is expected.
