- Course objectives
- Students will get a literary historical overview of changes in Czech literature for children and youth from the beginning to the present. Emphasis is on the form of current book production for children. Students will be able to interpret and critically reflect literary works for children on the basis of literary historical awareness.
- Learning outcomes
- Students are able to orientate themselves in the development of literature for youth in the context of social events and national literature, they are acquainted with its gold fund. They can analyze works from different genre areas (including narrative images), recognize author's strategies. Students are able to formulate and defend evaluation criteria for literature critique of literature for youth and apply them in literary criticism and pedagogical practice.
- Syllabus
- The seminar work is based on a collaborative interpretive analysis of selected literary works (the exact timetable is published to students in the first week of the semester): 1.-2. Introduction to the study of literature for young people, basic concepts and developmental contours. 3. Jan Karafiát: Broučci. The function of personification in the author's fairy tale; the ending of Beetles in the contemporary and contemporary social context; adaptive shifts in contemporary editorial practice. 4. Karel Čapek: Devatero pohádek. Compositional procedures and principles of Čapek's fairy tale narration (also in the light of the author's theoretical views on the fairy tale) and the subtype of the author's fairy tale represented by Devatero pohádek. 5. Jaroslav Foglar: Hoši od Bobří řeky. Instructionality and instructiveness of Foglar's literary work, typology of heroes, reading potential before and now. 6. Ota Hofman: Útěk, Ivona Březinová: Útěk Kryšpína N. Thematic affinities and differences between the two "escapes"; the form and motivation of escape in the prose of O. Hofman and I. Březinová; the narrative perspective of both prose. 7. František Tichý: Transport za věčnost. The interweaving of fictional and documentary levels - its advantages and disadvantages in literature for young people; the aesthetic and emotional effect of prose in relation to its verisimilitude. 8. Petra Soukupová: Kdo zabil Snížka? The way of depicting child and adult characters including their conflicts, relation to the animal hero. 9. Petr Sís: Zeď, Pavel Čech: A. Interpretation of an allegorical story in relation to the social and literary context; motivation of the story; genre characteristics. 10. Poetry for children. Interpretation of one of the contemporary poetry collections.

- Teaching methods
- The students will deepen their knowledge of literature for young people and develop their interpretive skills in a seminar form (analysis and interpretation of selected works). Seminar work requires preparation (individual reading of selected titles in the field of youth literature).
- Assessment methods
- Active participation in seminars (1 absence tolerated) and a continuous test (social and literary historical context) are prerequisites for admission to the examination. More detailed topics for the exam are published in the IS in the first week of the semester. The prerequisites for passing the exam are knowledge of the historical context (at least at the level of a high school graduate) and the literary-historical context of national and world literature, as well as the ability to interpret literary works on the basis of one's own reading (see the list of required readings). Completion: written examination (in the form of a coherent answer to an open-ended question on the history of literature for young people and a written interpretation of one of the required reading titles).
