Course objectives
The course is designed as preparation for the exam in the discipline of Russian syntax 1. The goal of the course is to provide deeper insight into the problems of syntactic comparison of Russian and Czech on the practical material. An integral part of teaching is to develop students' language skills and practice of translation from Czech into Russian and vice versa.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students are able to confront simple and compound sentences in Russian and Czech, to construct the Russian sentence properly, to apply the knowledge in the translation from Russian into Czech, to use punctuation in writing Russian texts correctly.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic syntactical units. Word combination, classification. Differences in the formation of word combination between Russian and Czech.
  • 2. Simple sentence. Analysis of different types of sentences according to communication intention.
  • 3. Analysis of sentence. Specifics of Russian negative sentences.
  • 4. The main sentence elements: subject and predicate. Determining the types of predicates.
  • 5. Emerging of sentence elements: attribute. Specifics of using in Russian.
  • 6. The direct and indirect object. Complement. Methods for expression. Translation structures with complement to Czech.
  • 7. Adverbial: analysis of morphological ways to express adverbials in Russian sentence.
  • 8. Differences in the use of one-element sentences in Russian in comparison with Czech.
  • 9. Compound sentences: syntactic analysis. Simple sentence vs. compound sentence in Russian and Czech.
  • 10. Determination of types of coordinate sentences. The contradiction between Russian coordinate sentences and Czech constructions.
  • 11. Analysis of complex sentences. in terms of internal structure., specifics of Czech translations of sentences into Russian.
  • 12. Asyndetical sentences. Exercise punctuation in asyndetical sentences.
