Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with basic principles and starting points of counselling and crisis intervention and provide them with theoretical as well as practical basics for working with clients within these disciplines. Students will get acquainted with the basic characteristics of counselling and of the counselling process, forms of counselling work and techniques of conducting a counselling interview. They will get familiar with the issue of crises, their characteristics, typology and course; with the possibilities, methods and principles of crisis intervention.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to apply the basic principles of counseling and crisis intervention in their own lives and in contact with clients.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition and basic characteristics of counselling. Counselling as an activity, a profession, an institution and as a scientific discipline. Types of counselling. 2. Client and counsellor in the counselling process. 3. Methods and forms of counselling. Individual and group counselling. Distance counselling (telephone, internet counselling etc.). 4. Phases of counselling process. Approaches and working methods. 5. Communication in the counselling process. Counselling interview and techniques of conducting a counselling interview. 6. Phenomenon of crisis in human life 7. Typology of crises, crisis stage, trauma, PSTD. 8. Concept of crisis intervention, definition, objectives 9. Basic principles, principles, models of crisis intervention 10. Typology of crisi intervention. 11. Suicide as an extreme solution to the crisis situation2. Work with own resources, emotions when working with a client in a crisis situationTypes of crisis intervention and their use 12. Contributing worker in the role of crisis intervention - requirements, competencies and prevention burn oust syndrome.

Teaching methods
Lecture, group discussion, practical exercises, seminar work, self-study
Assessment methods
Students will prepare a seminar paper on a chosen topic. Written exam: 15 test questions, 3 questions for writing. To successfully complete the course, students will need to score 50 % or higher (12 points).
