Prerequisites
Students will learn about definitions and selected theories related to the field of gerontology. They will create an activation program to be tested in a practice with a group or individuals from the senior citizens' community in an institutional or nursing home setting.

Course objectives
Gerontagogy is an emerging discipline in our environment, which combines a number of topics related to education and activation for seniors. The scientific level of the subject and the discipline are shaped by and respond to current developments in society. The teaching is conceived in selected topics that can be further expanded. Students will be introduced to definitions and selected theories that relate to the field of gerontology. They will develop an activation program to be tested in practice with a group or individuals from the elderly population in an institutional or nursing home setting.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course - The student will be familiar with theories of adaptation to old age and ageing - The student will be able to define what gerontagogy as a discipline of senior education and senior activation entails - Can perceive old age and ageing in the context of contemporary society, seniors as important actors in society - will be able to look at different forms of activation of seniors and will be able to develop an activation programme and implement it in practice - will be able to define ageism and everything related to it - The student will be familiar with the interrelationships between social work, social pedagogy and gerontology Keywords: Education of the elderly, activation of the elderly, adaptation to old age theory, social exchange theory, philosophy of old age, ageism.
Syllabus
  • Circuits for the theoretical part (and also for the exam) 1. Gerontagogy as a discipline of the future, the ageing population and its needs. 2. Ageing in the context of time, theories of ageing, socio-gerontological theories and theories of socio-emotional selectivity, the phenomenon of old age. 3. Theories of social exchange, social roles in old age, changes in attitudes and social behaviour, theories of selective optimization of s compensation, s old people as actors of social change and self-development. 4. Forms and methods of education of seniors, functions of education in the post-productive age (Academy of the Third Age, Universities of the Third Age, clubs of seniors, etc.), Czech and foreign experience. 5. Primary, secondary and tertiary activation of seniors (education for old age, further education of seniors and involvement of seniors in civil society, preservation and consolidation of existing abilities and maintenance of quality of life) 6. Activation of seniors (art therapy, music therapy, reminiscence therapy, animation, occupational therapy, pet therapy, resolution therapy, therapeutic gardens, etc.) 7. Ageism in society, causes and consequences, prevention and compensation. 8. Diseases in old age - dementia and their impact on the individual, family and society, possibilities of activating people with dementia 9. Seniors in institutional and family environment, possibilities of support within the social system, partnership and sexual life of seniors. 10. Education and activation programmes for seniors, new trends in education of seniors, seniors in the media. 11. Creating an activation programme and its application in practice.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation, seminar teaching, discussion, designing. As part of teamwork, students will create an activation programme for the elderly in institutional and home environments, which they will apply in practice and then present.
Assessment methods
Exam. Students Students will prepare for a written exam and present a project - a lesson they have completed in practice. The final grade will be the final part.
