- Course objectives
- The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the history of European civilization within the context of world history during the Modern Age, defined as approximately the period 1517-1800 with a slight overlap into the 19th century, and with particular emphasis on the history of the Czech lands.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students will have gained the essential background to continue their studies in history and will have acquired an overview of the historical events and phenomena from the given period.
- Syllabus
- The Early Modern Age state – characteristics: absolutism, court society, bureaucracy; voyages of discovery and the start of colonial powers; the rise of the Habsburgs.
- Religious developments in 16th-century Europe – the start of the Reformation; Luther, Calvin, Zwingli; religious wars – France and Germany; the Peace of Augsburg; the transformation of the papacy; the Council of Trent; recatholicization and confessionalization.
- The creation of the Danubian monarchy – the reign of Ferdinand I and Maximilian II, the wars with the Turks; the political system of the Czech lands before the Battle of White Mountain and the religious situation.
- Tensions at the turn of the 16th/17th century – the creation of religious-defence associations; the Czech Estates’ Rising; White Mountain and subsequent developments in the Czech lands.
- The Thirty Years’ War, the Peace of Westphalia and its consequences.
- The English Civil War; the Glorious Revolution; France Louis XIV.
- The Habsburg Empire in the mid-17th century – the recatholicization approach; wars with the Turks and France; religion and Baroque culture.
- The rise of Prussia; 18th-century Russia; the division of Poland; the Enlightenment.
- The reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II – transformation of the Austrian monarchy; enlightened reforms; the Prussian Wars; developments in the Czech lands.
- The French and American revolutions; the Napoleonic Wards; response to events in the Czech lands and the origins of the National Revival.
