Cíle předmětu

This course will engage various places and spaces, as well as their cultural representations, that have had lasting impacts on Anglophone cultures and/or aptly capture current conditions. Some lessons will be devoted to specific locations and institutions, such as the Renaissance theatres in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the psychogeographies of Underground London and the contemporary show-biz scene of Broadway. Others will be devoted to broader urban settings and their accompanying issues such as racism, as depicted in the films Do the Right Thing (1989) and L. A. Crash (2004) and the HBO series The Wire (2002-2008). Special attention will be paid to how various literary and visual representations of spaces are employed for biographical, cultural, political, social, and other ends. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to discuss the writings of others with greater sensitivity and appreciation; will have a better understanding of the contexts and importance of places and spaces in Anglophone cultures; and will be familiar with a number of key figures - creative, historical, and/or scholarly - who have influenced this area of consideration.
In case of a low number of registered students, the course might be cancelled.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to discuss the writings of others with greater sensitivity and appreciation; will have a better understanding of the contexts and importance of places and spaces in Anglophone cultures; and will be familiar with a number of key figures - creative, historical, and/or scholarly - who have influenced this area of consideration.
