Course objectives
In this course, we will explore language from the perspective of psycholinguistics. We will ask questions such as how is it acquired in childhood and how is it produced and comprehended in adulthood. We will do so by examining a series of concrete questions in the field with the broader implications for linguistic theory and cognitive science in mind. Focus will also be placed on the methodology used in psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics. The course will also include a practical part which will consist in designing, setting up and analysing a psycholinguistic experiment.
Learning outcomes
After taking the course, the student will be able to: - show knowledge in specific areas of the acquisition, production, and comprehension of language;
- how the questions of psycholinguistics fit within the larger field of linguistics and cognitive science;
- interpret the results of experiments in psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics
- understand some of the most commonly used methods in psycholinguistic research
- understand the basics of experimental design
- set up and analyse an experiment
