Course objectives
The aim of this course is to teach students the dramaturgical principles of approaching the scripts (texts) of a theatre production from the perspective of translation theory. On the basis of case studies and on the theoretical principles of theatre making the importance of the choices of translation and/or adaptation of a particular play will be demonstrated as well as the choice's consequences for the resulting production, including minute details.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
* explain the notion of dramaturgy;
* articulate and analyze the relationship between the directorial-dramaturgical concept and the choices of translation/adaptation used for the production;
* compare concrete translations/adaptations and describe their dramaturgy;
* explicate the complexity of drama translation and adaptation in theoretical terms.

  • 1. Introduction: basic terms (translation, adaptation, dramaturgy).
  • 2. Translation theory: the translation-adaptation spectrum
  • 3. Case study 1: Menaechmové (transaltions Stiebitz, Pivec)
  • 4. Case study 2: The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night (adoption and appropiration)
  • 5. Case study 3: Romeo and Julie (transaltions and adaptations)
  • 6. Case study 4: Hedda Gabler (translations Rak, Fröhlich and adaptation Saavedra)
  • 7. A revisiting of basic terms: evaluation
