Course objectives
The aim of the course is an introduction to the heritage conservation. The basic ideas and participants are discussed, as well as the history and contemporary state of affairs. The architectural preservation and relevant issues are emphasized. Good or controversial examples from praxis are scrutinized and turned to subjects of a deep analysis from various points of view, from the strictly conservational one to the political one.
Learning outcomes
The successful student is able:
- to describe the history of heritage preservation in the Western world with its main turning points, aims and ideas;
- to recognize contemporary "hot topics" of the discipline and to explain them;
- to understand the methodology of the discipline;
- to communicate within the institutional frame of the discipline in Czechia;
- to understand professional language and technical documentation used (plans, drawings, reports).

  • 1. "Monument", "heritage", "conservation" and other basic notions;
  • 2. History of heritage conservation in ancient times and the Middle Ages;
  • 3. Heritage conservation up to the XIXth century;
  • 4. Heritage conservation at the turn of the XXth century;
  • 5. Heritage conservation in the XXth century;
  • 6. Heritage conservation in former Czechoslovakia;
  • 7. Heritage conservation in Czechia after 1989;
  • 8. Protected areas, natural and cultural;
  • 9. Contemporary "hot topics" of the heritage conservation;
  • 10. Individual assignment with the documentation;
  • 11. Individual research in situ;
  • 12. Presentation and discussion (room panel).
