Course objectives
The course presents the genesis of European ethnology as a scientific discipline, which will be approached as a specifically Central-European contribution to the study of culturally-conditioned behaviour in complex industrial societies. On particular examples, the course shall indicate the usefulness of the European ethnology´s concept for the study of Czech or Central-European environment.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will be able to understand the concept of European ethnology and the basic development stages of this discipline; they will be able to define basic methodological approaches, and development trends and tendencies.

  • 1. Unipolar and polypolar concepts of ethnology/anthropology.
  • 2. European comparative ethnology from the point of view of historical development.
  • 3. Methods and epistemological background of European ethnology.
  • 4. The beginnings of ethnological interest in European populations.
  • 5. German and Russian tradition of ethnological research.
  • 6. Research of the urban environment from a European comparative perspective.
  • 7. Ideological sources of European ethnology in  19. And the 20th century.
  • 8. Study of intercultural communication from the perspective of European ethnology.
  • 9. Practical examples of case studies of European ethnology from a Central European perspective
