Course objectives
The course is focused on the knowledge and ability to analyze group identities on various grounds, in various developmental contexts and social contexts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to recognize basic theoretical concepts and approaches enabling the conceptualization of social groups or minorities of society. Students will understand the mechanisms of social construction of minorities, discourses of otherness and politicization of collective identities in today's world.

  • Theoretical concepts of the study of social groups Social constructivism Ethnic perspective - ethnic identity vs. ethnically indifferent groups Mechanisms of negative stigmatization and stereotyping of Others Social perspective - mechanisms of social exclusion Segregation, marginalization, exclusion, ghettoization, construction of "inadaptability" Stigmatization of social groups - 1) Roma and the discourse of Czech anti-Gypsyism, 2) Islamophobia Multiculturalism and identity politics Analysis of the French affair with Muslim headscarves and the mechanism of moral panic
