- Course objectives
- The objective of the course is to introduce travelling in the Czech lands and in the old Austria in the 18th and 19th centuries as seen from the viewpoint of the social and economic history, as well as from that of migration history. The priority is the understanding of the basic development trends in the history of travelling, construction of roads, travelling by post transport mans and by rail, which is facilitated by the analysis of timetables of fast post stagecoaches, maps of post-exchange routes and of other period texts and visual documents. Learners will be acquainted with period travelling and with identity documents.

- 1. Roads, their status and development. Construction of roads in Austria. 2. Hygiene on travelling 3. Psychology of travelling or “How to behave when travelling” 4. Post and transport of passengers 5. “Diligence” or regular transport of passengers, luggage or post by fast post stagecoaches 6. First railways: Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway 7. The Southern and The Northern Railway; the development of rail 8. Local railways and the so-called sidings 9. The genesis of municipal transport 10. Checking of passengers 11. Travel documents and powers of issuing authorities 12. Identification documents 13. Move of persons throughout the monarchy.
