Course objectives
The course will cover various aspects of Italian language and linguistics. The aim of the course will be to analyse the synchronic structures of Italian, with particular reference to morphosyntactic aspects and the speech dimension.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn to use the tools of the discipline, through theoretical-methodological seminars and research activities on corpora of spoken Italian. At the end of the course, students will be able to: - critically evaluate the linguistic phenomena covered by the course - communicate information, present issues and problems relating to the field of study, both in oral and written form, to specialist and non-specialist addressees - identify relevant data for the solution of analytical problems and manage their own self-critical learning.
Syllabus
  • The course will be developed around the following topics - characteristics of verbal language (linguistic sign, arbitrariness, double articulation etc.) - basics of phonetics and phonology (partly self-study) - basics of Italian morphology (words and morphemes, inflectional morphology, word formation); - basics of syntax (syntagmas, sentence and constituent analysis, constituent order, semantic roles, argument structure, transitivity; information structure); syntax of the complex sentence (partly self-study). a) Active participation in at least 80% of the linguistic seminars held by guest scholars (including those that will be part of the Seminario permanente di linguistica italiana, the calendar of which will be communicated at the beginning of the semester); in addition to attendance, study materials will be provided, the contents of which will be partly included in the final examination questions. b) As an alternative to (a), it will be necessary to agree on other in-depth study paths (essays) through the study of additional bibliographic materials. Possible monographic focuses for possible individual advanced studies (written essays): speech phenomena (reductions etc.); suprasegmental phonology; evaluative morphology; parasynthesis; the flexive system of Italian in comparison with other Romance languages; the inflectional system of Italian in comparison with Slavic languages; advanced studies on inaccusativity; syntax phenomena of the complex sentence; history of the discipline.
