The aim of the course is reading and analysing selected play, usually Sophocles' Oidipus King. The analysis consists of the following parts: stylistic, literary, cultural and historical. After completing the course the students are able to apply those interpretative criteria on Sophocles' text.

The aim of the course is the reading and analysis of a chosen play, usually Sophokles's Oidipus King. The analysis consists of following parts: stylistic, literary, cultural and historical. After completing the course the students are able to apply these interpretative criteria on Sophocles' text.

  • 2. Literary works of Sophocles.
  • 3. Metre of Sophocles' plays.
  • 4. Oedipus in the ancient literature.
  • 5. Oedipus in modern literatures.
  • In each lesson: Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the text (approximately two pages of the text of the Teubner edition per lesson) - analysis of specific morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic phenomena, comments of the teacher and papers of the students.

Reading and analysis of selected text, as a rule of Sophokles's Oidipus King.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to literary work of Sophocles.
  • 2. Sophocless metrum.
  • 3.-12. Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the text (approximately two pages of the text of Teubners edition are interpreted during every lesson): analysis of specific morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic phenomena comments of the teacher and papers of the students (mythology of Thebes, development of the Greek drama, Greek tragedy, influence of the ancient tragedy on the European literature).

Předpokladem pro udělení zápočtu je aktivní účast studenta v seminářích a přednesení referátu na vybrané téma. Při ústní zkoušce musí student prokázat na vybraném úryvku velmi dobrou schopnost interpretace a správného překladu.

Reading and analysis of certain text, usually Plato's text Apologia Socratis.

  • Analysis of specific morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic phenomena. Seminar themes: Classic Greek philosophy, Socrates and Plato, the system of justice in Athens, the trial of Socrates.
