Course objectives
The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with the problematic of translation of literary texts into Czech language. The students will gain translation skills during the translation of Latin dramatic text - the Plautine comedy Curculio. Students will be acquainted with the specific features of dramatic genre (performative qualities, potentiality of dramatic rendering of the text) and the typical ancient comic situations, as well as with concrete translatorial methods (substitution). The course enables the students to try out in practice translating of ancient text into Czech language in a modern and understandable way.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students will be familiar with the problematic of translation of literary texts into Czech language. The students will gain practical translation skills during the translation of Latin dramatic text. They will be able to recognize the performative qualities of dramatic texts, to consider the specific features of dramatic text genre and to use concrete translatorial methods. They will be able to find appropriate Czech expressions and idioms for the translation of ancient text into Czech language.

  • 1. Classical theatre in performance (how ancient dramas were put on the stage).
  • 2. Introduction to classical Greek and Roman drama (conventions, genres, New comedy).
  • 3. Roman comedy: Plautus: themes, topic, characteristic persons and motives).
  • 4. Czech translations of Plautus up to now.
  • 5. Performativity of dramatic text.
  • 6. Translatorial methods.
  • 7-13 Translation of selected passages of Plautus´ comedy Curculio.
