Course objectives
The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from the 13th century to the end of the period (i.e. to the time of John Hus, or the Hussite movement).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia in the 14th century; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature; to describe the connections of 14th-century Latin literature of Bohemian origin with the development of Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of the 14th-century Latin literature in Bohemia; to analyze language and style of selected treatises.

Course objectives
Latin literature of the Czech Middle Ages from its beginnings (10th century) to the end of the period (to the times of Iohannes Hus and partly the Hussite movement). The course is divided into two parts. At the end of the second part, students should be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia in 14th century; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature; to identify the connections of the 14th-century Latin literature in Bohemia with the development of the Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of the 14th-century Latin literature in Bohemia; to analyze the language and style of their selected works.

Latin literature of the Czech Middle Ages from its beginnings (10th century) to the end of the Middle Ages (to the times of Iohannes Hus). Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows: to present individual genres of the Latin Bohemian literature; to point out its connections with the development of the Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to explicate influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature. Medieval latin is a historico-cultural and linguistic phenomenon, continuing the old tradition of latin language and literature of Classical Antiquity. The course on medieval latin exemplifies this continuity and brings up the main characteristics of medieval latin and literature, acting as upholders of spiritual culture in both the European and Czech Middle Ages. The course also presents medieval latin as the language of historical sources and diplomatic documents. It outlines all information about the sources and specialized literature for further study of this topic.

  • LECTURE: Topics and chronology of medieval latin studies. History of medieval latin studies. Constituent elements of medieval latin (Classical latin, Vulgar latin, Christian latin). Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of medieval latin. State of latin language in late Roman empire. Merovingian latin. Carolingian Renaissance (and other "humanistic" movements of the Middle Ages up to Renaissance Humanism). Benedictine monasteries of the early Middle Ages. Insular latin and its representatives. Christianization of Czech lands and the origins of Czech-latin literature. Latin of high Middle Ages (main divergency of classical latin). Forms and genres of medieval latin prose. Forms of medieval latin poetry (metrical, rhytmical and rhytmo-metrical poetry). Sacred poetry of the latin Middle Ages. Secular poetry of the latin Middle Ages. Course objectives
The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from the 13th century to the end of the period (i.e. to the time of John Hus, or the Hussite movement).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia in the 14th century; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature; to describe the connections of 14th-century Latin literature of Bohemian origin with the development of Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of the 14th-century Latin literature in Bohemia; to analyze language and style of selected treatises.
