reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
explain grammatical rules studied within the course;
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
translate elementary Latin texts using a dictionary;
explain the functions of selected syntactic structures;
use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena;
demonstrate relations between roots of selected Latin words and Czech loan words. - Syllabus
- Double accusative construction, accusative with infinitive.
- 4th and 5th declension, demonstrative pronouns.
- Interrogative and relative pronouns, relative clauses; negative pronouns; pronominal adjectives.
- Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
- Present and imperfect subjunctive mood of all conjugations and the verb esse. Their use in simple sentences.
- Use of present and imperfect subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses (UT clauses, cum historicum).
- Perfect indicative tense (active and passive voices).
- Perfect infinitive (active and passive voices).

- Assessment methods
- Active class participation (min. 75%) and regular preparation of grammar and translation assignments are the essential requirements for obtaining the credit. The grade is determined by the performance in a final written test where students’ mastery of basic grammar is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionaries allowed).

- Course objectives
- The course aims at providing students with the basics of Latin grammar system. The emphasis is placed on gaining the gist of the system and of the functions of individual grammatical categories and their appropriate terming. Students master common forms of nouns and verbs and the principles of their formation. Attention is also paid to the most frequent syntactic features. Concerning the vocabulary, students are taught the frequent word roots many of which appear in the modern languages. At the end of this course, students are able to read elementary Latin texts. The knowledge of the principles of Latin grammatical system and the basic vocabulary gives students a good basis for the study of other languages.

- verbs – tenses of the perfect system (perfect, pluperfect, future perfect), perfect and future infinitive, subjunctive mood; irregular verbs, participles, the gerund and gerundive, supine.

- independent uses of the subjunctive, consecutive clauses, indirect speech, participle constructions, periphrastic conjugation, ablative absolute; uses of accusative and nominative in subordinate clauses, gerundive constructions.

- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide students with the rudiments of Latin grammar system. The main emphasis will be on the general idea of the system functioning as well as on the understanding of the functions of individual grammatical categories and their terminology. Students will master common forms of nouns and verbs, and the principles of their forming. Attention will also be paid to the most frequent syntactic features. As regards Latin lexis, students will be taught the most frequently used word roots, out of which many can be found in modern languages. At the end of the course students should be able to read less sophisticated Latin texts. The knowledge of the principles of the functioning of Latin grammar system and the basic vocabulary will give students a good basis for the study of other languages.
- Syllabus
- 1. Survey of Latin grammar system – grammatical categories, basic terminology. Phonetics – information on various types of pronunciation. 2. Nouns: declension 1-5. 3. Adjectives, comparison of adjectives. 4. Present participle. 5. Basic pronouns (personal, possessive, interrogative, relative, negative and some demonstrative as well as indefinite pronouns). 6. The forming of adverbs. 7. Present indicative of all conjugations and the verb “esse“. 8. Imperative, present infinitive - active and passive. 9. Imperfect indicative. 10. Future indicative. 11. Deponent verbs. 12. Direct questions. 13. Relative clauses.

- Teaching methods
- The subject is taught as a SEMINAR. This interactive course applies the teaching methods used in modern languages, class participation and home preparation are therefore necessary.
- Assessment methods
- Requirements for successful completion of the course: regular class attendance (students may miss 3 classes altogether); passing the final test (passing limit 70%). To be allowed to take exam, students have to pass a colloquium on selected topic.
