Course objectives
The whole body of two one-semester courses deals with various aspects of the programme to study language through the notion of linguistic sign. Part I is oriented towards the abstract system of language, Part II towards interpreting concret texts.
Syllabus
  • I. 1) Polarity of abstract system of language and of concrete texts 2) Plurality of the notion of sign 3) The revolutionary nouum of Saussure's binary linguistic sign 4) The variable minimality of the sign 5) Elementary vs. complex sign 6) The sign nature of sentence II. 1) Domains of definitions: lexicon vs. grammar 2) Lexical semes: inherent vs. afferent, generic vs. specific; levels of genericity 3) Valency of lexemes 4) Interpreting syntagmata: grammatical and lexical-semic components 5) Repetition and co-existence of sememes 6) A la recherche de l'isotopie du texte
