Course objectives
The course is focused on an analysis of phonological and morphological levels of Old Czech texts. Work with transliterared texts, selected to cover significant stages of development of Czech, will provide students with the opportunity to apply in practice the knowledge gained from theoretical sources. The aim of the course is to understand main laws in the development of both mentioned language levels and to gain ability to reconstruct stages of development of phonological and morphological phenomena during the one thousand years of existence of Czech. The special focus is on linking earlier stages of development with contemporary Czech, as the knowledge of earlier stages will help students to understand better and to explain better the present-day situation of Czech, especially with regard to its irregularities and exceptions (e.g. alterations or morphological doublets).
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
to characterize the development of the Czech phonological system from 10th to the end of the 16th century;
