Course objectives
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the historical development and modern form of registry editing techniques, including mastering the practical skills of creating substitute registers. In the first two lessons, students learn about the most important registry editions in Czech and Central European history and how they transformed over time (especially Regesta Imperii, Regesta Pontificum Romanorum, Repertorium Germanicum, Repertorium Poenitentiariae Germanicum, Regesta diplomatica non epistolaria Bohemiae et Moraviae, Regesta Bohemiae et Moraviae Aetatis Venceslai IV, Archives of the Crown of Bohemia: Catalogue of Charters, Regesten zur Schlesischen Geschichte or Regesty Śląskie, Regesta Habsburgica, Regesten zur Geschichte der Stadt Wien, Regesta diplomatica nec epistolaria Slovaciae, Anjoukori oklevéltár, Zsigmondkori oklevéltár). In the second and third part of the seminars, there is an examination of the modern editorial principles of Regesta Imperii, Regesta Bohemiae et Moraviae aetatis Venceslai IV, which are applied to several illustrative examples - German and Latin registers of shorter charters and documents, which will be created by the lecturer directly in front of the students. In the subsequent part, the students themselves will create substitute Czech registers of shorter documents, always individually, in front of the lecturers and other colleagues. This is followed by a discussion, which will attempt to find the optimal form for the register of the particular documents.
Learning outcomes
Students will acquire a comprehensive overview of the development and contemporary forms of registry editing techniques and will master the technique of working with substitute registers.

  • 1-3) The history of registry editing techniques and the main register editions relating to Czech and Central European history
  • 4-6) Presenting the editorial rules of the Regest Imperii and an excerpt from the substitute registers of the imperial charters
  • 7-9) Presenting the editorial rules of the Regest Bohemiae et Moraviae aetatis Venceslai IV and and an excerpt from the Latin substitute registers based on these rules;
  • 10-13) Creation of substitute Czech registers of documents selected by the students.

Teaching methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars. After presenting the necessary introductory information, the tutor will present the registry editing technique in practice and create several "model" substitute registers in front of the students. Subsequent registers will then be created by individual students in front of the teacher and colleagues, which are then discussed together.
Assessment methods
The criteria for being awarded a credit are: active participation in the seminar, preparation of a Czech registry of selected documents in a lesson in front of the tutor and fellow students, and also a credit test consisting of individual work on three registers of Czech, German and Latin documents.
