- Course objectives
- The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with techniques for analysing and interpreting sigillography material from the perspective of sigillography itself, but also of diplomatics and heraldry. In addition, undergraduates in the seminar will also acquire the edition methods to make sigillography material available in critical editions and databases.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon finishing the course students will be able to:
- formally describe a Medieval seal
- understand, describe and interpret the iconography of Medieval seals
- analyse and interpret a seal using other sources, particularly from diplomatics
- apply their knowledge of seals in a wider context and in other auxiliary disciplines, especially Medieval diplomatics and heraldics
- make a seal critically available within a series - Syllabus
- Iconography and interpretation of a seal image
- Between sigillography and diplomatics – the seal as an integral part of documents
- Historical descriptions and depictions of seals as sources for sigillography
- Seals from the perspective of heraldry
- Edition method for making sigillography material available; editions and databases of seals

- Teaching methods
- Through a seminar paper and active participation, undergraduates on the course will become acquainted with the basic procedures for processing sigillography material. Students will be assigned individual tasks which will form the framework for the next lesson.
- Assessment methods
- The awarding of credits is dependent upon active participation in seminars, completing assigned tasks, presenting an essay and submitting it in the form of an academic article.
