Course objectives
Lecture on cultural geography of Greek regions (Peloponnese, Continental Greece, Thessaly, Macedonia, Aegean islands, …) with focus on classical culture.
During the lectures, the teacher presents particular regions one by one. The student briefly get to know the mythological topography of the region (the myths connected to the particular areas), the history of the region, after that, the teacher lectures on the most significant monuments from ancient times.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- identify and characterize the most significant ancient monuments in the territory of Greece, including their present condition;
- comprehend their origins and development in a historical context;
- describe the basic development of classical Greek architecture;
- in case of their employment in tourism, they will be able to provide their clients with fundamental information on classical Greek culture and the most significant archaeological localities in the territory of Greece.

  • Geography of Ancient Greek World.
  • Outline of Greek cultural and mythological topography: places of the most significant monuments, mythical pilgrimages and events, main places of worship of individual gods, oracles, spas, games, theatre festivals.
  • Aegean Islands: Cyclades, Crete, Santorini – Minoan civilization, …
  • Peloponnese: Mycenae, Argos – Mycenaean civilization, Olympia – Olympic games, Epidaurus – ancient theatre, Corinthus, Bassai – ancient temples.
  • Central Greece: Athens, Sunion, Delphes, …
  • Thessaly: Dimitrias, Iolkos.
  • Epidaurus: Dodona, Nicopolis, …
