Course objectives
The aim of the course is a first approach to the different dimensions of lexicography from a general perspective, but also to Hispanic lexicography in particular. The student will learn how to handle dictionaries, what type of information can be provided by various types of them and how to interpret the data offered by certain works. Likewise, special attention will be paid to digital dictionaries, lexicographical criticism and the social value of dictionaries in current Hispanic societies.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to successfully manage different types of dictionaries and take advantage of the information offered there. He or she will also know how to evaluate and choose the most appropriate dictionaries according to the particular needs of queries he or she wants to make. The student will also get acquainted with other genres of lexicographical works, especially with linguistic databases.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic concepts of lexicography. Lexicographical genres. Brief introduction to Hispanic lexicography. The challenges of Hispanic lexicography in the 21st century.
  • 2. Retroactive lexicography versus proactive lexicography. Corpus and databases.
  • 3. Typology of lexicographical works. Classification criteria. Normativity vs. description.
  • 4. Digital lexicography. The electronic dictionaries. Online dictionaries (general and specialized). Digital dictionaries and E / LE.
  • 5. The structure of dictionaries: mega-structure, macrostructure and microstructure.
  • 6. Critical lexicography and lexicographical criticism. The dictionary as discourse. Ideology and dictionaries. The social value of dictionaries in Spanish-speaking societies today.
