Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide theoretical, analytical and interpretative instruments for understanding media art, especially multimedia art. It also aims to develop students' competences in the field of individual research activities together with the simulation of the increasingly necessary expert teamwork. The course represents an introduction to the problem of multimedia in a broader context of art manifestos and their concrete application. Although multimedia seem to be rooted in the realm of digital media in 1980's, in a broader "archaeological" sense its basic principles could be traced back to artistic and theoretical approaches of 18th and 19th century.
Learning outcomes
- Obtaining knowledge and interpretative skills in the field of basic notions and history.
- Providing basic conceptual instruments for multimedia art analysis.
- Competence in independent research and documentation: data/material collection, critical reading, interpretation, presentation, feedback and its processing.

Teaching methods
Lecture, parallel reading of the recommended texts, discussion.

- basic source research (study of sources in memory institutions, personal archives, literature research),
- interviews and questionnaire surveys,
- documentation of media art,
- analytical procedures,
- data/sources processing and interpretation in a team,
- presentation of the results of teamwork in the seminar,
- working with feedback from students and lecturer.
Assessment methods
- min. 75% attendance
- presentation and submission of team project outputs to the IS submission folder.
