Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the dialectal division of the Ukrainian language, as well as to acquaint them with the phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactic features of the Ukrainian dialects. The course is designed to broaden the understanding of Ukrainian realia. Students will gain practice in intralingual translation, learn to work with the Atlas of the Ukrainian Language and dialect dictionaries. The knowledge gained in this course will help students in their work of literary translation and simultaneous interpreting from Ukrainian into Czech.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- know the basic dialectological terminology;
- identify, analyse and explain dialect phenomena;
- understand the genesis of Ukrainian dialects;
- know the dialectal division of the modern Ukrainian language;
- identify the main phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic features of each dialect;
- transcribe dialectal lexical units;
- use the Atlas of the Ukrainian Language and dialect dictionaries.

Teaching methods
The classes consist of two parts, theoretical and practical. The practical part involves teamwork, combined with the use of various authentic materials (maps, images, Internet memes, texts, video, audio) and interactive learning tools (games, quizzes).
Assessment methods
Active participation in classes, completion of assignments throughout the semester, a final written test.
