Course objectives
The course is based on the comparative study of Czech translations of selected literary texts. The participants will be asked to compare all existing Czech translations of a given literary work and draw conclusions about the particular texts as well as about translation in general. Each session will focus on a specific problem typical of the analysed text (eg., syntax and style, colloquial language and the depiction of a character, specific terminology, cultural differences). The students will also have to translate short passages of the texts themselves. The method of work is identical with the "Translation Analysis A" course; the two courses differ in the texts analyzed and can be taken in any order. Translations analyzed: Fielding, Dickens, Melville, Lewis, Heller.
