Course objectives
An introduction to reading an original Greek text advised to all "beginners" (reading of Xenophons Cyrou paideia with comentary).
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the literary work of Xenophon.
  • 2. Greek historiography and ancient romances.
  • 3. Introduction to textual criticism, its importance for translation of the Greek original texts; editions with comentaries.
  • 4.-12. Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the Greek text (approximately one page of the text of Teubners edition is interpreted during every lesson): translation of Greek original text to Czech (differences between the word-for-word and a fitting translation, looking for adequate expressions in Czech language for different Greek syntactic constructions) grammatical and syntactical analysis identification of subordinate clauses and their formal characteristics.
