Course objectives
The lecture is focused on the development of Czech modern scene design, as a part of Czech modern art in the period from the end of the 19th century (The National Theatre in Prague was opened in 1883) until the end of the forties (the department of scene design at Prague s DAMU was founded in 1946).
Main topics of this course can be summarized as follows:
- to understand the theatre work of Czech modern art leading artists with their art and scene design s theory and reflection of their own work;
- to study the development of the world and European scene design;
- to analyze the influence of France, Russia, and Germany on the Czech theatre world;
Syllabus
  • Introduction to subject – staging of the post-renaissance s theatre.
  • World s and Czech s staging practice at the end of the 19th century.
  • The first theatrical reform, the European s and Czech s start of the modernism (symbolism, impressionism, expressionism, futurism, the reform of the stage – A. Appia, E.G.Craig).
  • Czechoslovak s theatre s structure, the changes of the system and of the ideas.
  • Czechoslovak s scene designers in the official theatres and on the avant-garde stages in the 20s.
  • The 30s – enforced the avant-garde art on the official stages.
