Course objectives
The course is focused on theories, ideas and selected works of visual arts explored within the broader context of visual culture. Beside exercise of traditional branches, art history and aesthetics, there will be also taken account of methods of an interdisciplinary study of visual culture, especially anthopology, within the course.
Syllabus
  • 1) Definitions and synopsis of the course, requirements, 2) Visual culture - metamorphoses of the paradigm: a/ truth, power and rhetorics, b/ artist, comissioner and spectator, authenticity of a work, c/ idea in art – concepts, 3) Is there a visual language? Research of gestures, the pathos formulas etc., 4) Depiction - perception: a/ construction of the picture space, b/ optical illusions, 5) Theory of colours, 6) Theory of photographical image, 7) Scientific and cultural anthropology, 8) Body, sex, genus: a/ medium - body - representation, b/ "naked truth" and representation of the carnal, c/ feminism, 9) Theory of architecture, urbanism and design, 10) "High" and "low" in visual culture: a/ the "noble", sacred space and the forms of the numinous, b/ peripherical spheres of the visual culture, c/ avantgard and kitsch, d/ pop art and related tendencies, 11) Virtual reality; 12) Recapitulation
